Theo Peckham confident he will make the Oilers

This article mentions that only 3 defencemen are guaranteed a spot on the roster (Tom Gilbert, Ryan Whitney, and Ladislav Smid) although Kurtis Foster on the 2nd pairing is very likely, assuming that Sheldon Souray gets traded or sits out. There’s a good battle for the last 2-3 spots with Theo Peckham, Jim Vandermeer, Shawn Belle, and Jason Strudwick. Theo Peckham is confident he’ll make the team.

“This is the first year I think I have a true chance of sticking around,” Peckham said. “But I know the way Tom (Renney) coaches, and you have to earn everything that you get, so it should be interesting.”

“You constantly have to keep proving yourself. There are jobs obviously open, but you have to earn it. There are a lot of good young guys coming up and you have to show them what it takes.”

“This summer I focused on staying healthy, making sure I gave my best opportunity to make the team this year.”

Tom Gilbert excited about upcoming season

Defenceman Tom Gilbert can’t wait for the season to start and is excited about all the new faces, whether it be the players or the coaches.

“It was a great summer for me, I spent a lot of time here and I spent a lot of time in Madison, Wis., and I’m ready for the season to get started. It’s been way too long,” Gilbert said. “From what I’ve seen so far this year, it’s been nothing but positive. The training staff has been great, they’re easy to talk to and it seems like they’ve been there forever.”The coaching staff speaks for themselves. They’ve all had success where they’ve been before. I’m definitely looking forward to that.”

“We have some young guys coming in and it’s exciting. It’s exciting to see what those kids can do, regardless if they make the team or not, and I’m looking forward to getting on the ice with them.”

“You never think being 27 would be considered that old. But with the players we have coming in, a leadership role is definitely a role that I want to get into to.” Winnipeg Sun

Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson drops the Svensson

As you have noticed, we at OilersHQ have been referring to Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson (or is it Magnus Svensson-Paajarvi?) as simply Magnus Paajarvi for the last little while. It’s now official.

“It was too long,” Paajarvi said Wednesday. “It’s just so much easier to just have Paajarvi. I was going to have the name Svensson-Pajaarvi, but hockey-wise, (I decided) I’m going to have Paajarvi.”

A few notes:

  • Paajarvi’s father, Gunnar Svensson, and mother, Maria Paajarvi, divorced 12 years ago. That was when Magnus decided to attach Paajarvi to his surname
  • Paajarvi’s brother, Bjorn Svensson, who is currently playing in Sweden, didn’t do the same TSN

Dubnyk won’t take advantage of Khabibulin’s demise

Starting goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin was sentenced to 30-days behind bars, but backup Devan Dubnyk won’t look at how this could benefit his own situation:

“As soon as you start thinking, ‘Well, maybe he won’t be there and there’ll be an easier job opening,’ then you’re not prepared,” said Dubnyk, the lone Oilers representative in a sea of Flames practice jerseys Wednesday afternoon.

“I don’t think it should make a difference for myself going into camp. I need to go there and do what I need to do. It shouldn’t really matter.” Edmonton Journal

Several ex-Oilers without jobs

Many free agents are still on the market with training camp just a few weeks away. Several of them are ex-Oilers: Patrick O’Sullivan, Ryan Potulny, and Mike Comrie. Fernando Pisani and Aaron Johnson recently signed with the Blackhawks and Predators, respectively. O’Sullivan was waived by the Oilers during the summer, and then bought out by Phoenix; he would cost only $450,000 US next season and the following. Edmonton Journal

Oilers young trio speak

Here are some great new quotes from Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, and Magnus Paajarvi. oilers.nhl.com

“With the history they have with their team, and the passion they have in that city as far as hockey, it’s an exciting town to go into and hopefully I get an opportunity to play there,” said Eberle, who will be attending his third training camp with the club. “I’m just going to focus on making the team first. That’s my main goal, to secure a spot on that team. From then, it’s obviously turning it into winning.”

“The first day I walked into the locker room this summer, you can just feel the atmosphere,” said Paajarvi, who went by Paajarvi-Svensson in Sweden but has shortened his last name with the Oilers. “They have these pictures with the Cups in the ’80s with the pictures of (Mark) Messier, (Wayne) Gretzky, (Jari) Kurri and (Paul) Coffey. They have some unbelievable history, and I’m just super excited to hopefully make the team.”

“I’m tremendously excited,” said Hall, the first pick in the 2010 Entry Draft. “I’ve been to the city a couple times, and the feeling in the city is they’re really excited for this team. There’s myself and a couple other young guys that could make the team this year and make an impact. I think things are looking up for this city.”

“It’s us three, but there’s a lot of other good, young players on this team that are 22, 23, and their careers are going in the right direction,” Hall said. “If we can turn this ship around in the next few years, and the coaches and management make all the right decisions, things are looking up.”
